CHVRCHES' Singer Fights Back Against Online Rape Threats

Lauren Mayberry, lead singer of electro-pop trio CHVRCHES, once again condemned online sexism after receiving misogynistic and violent tweets.

Last night, Glasgow native Lauren Mayberry posted a screengrab of one offensive Instagram comment.

She captioned it:

My band is lucky enough to have some of the most awesome, supportive and respectful fans in the world and we are so excited to be in the studio making an album to share with them. Yet, on a daily basis, we still receive communications like this. These people never learn that violence against women is unacceptable. But they also never learn that women will not be shamed and silenced and made to disappear. I am not going anywhere. So bring it on, motherfuckers. Let’s see who blinks first.

Right on!

It’s not the first time Mayberry has tackled online sexism. She previously wrote an op-ed piece for The Guardian which called out online trolls who spam CHVRCHES social media pages with rape threats and derogatory comments.

Speaking to The Outmost in 2014, Mayberry, who is a founder of feminist collective TYCI, explained why she decided to write the piece for The Guardian. She said, “Each time I’d post things and I’d get those comments it would annoy me a little more. The Guardian gave me a chance to write about it and to take the argument out of the social networks, which I think was helpful. I think that anything that can start a discussion on a more mainstream platform is really positive.”
