The announcement this weekend that Labour’s Nia Griffith and SNP’s Hannah Bardell are gay brings the total of openly lesbian, gay and bisexual MPs in the UK’s House of Commons to 35.

32 LGB politicians were voted in at last year’s election reports Gay Times, but Scottish Secretary David Mundell’s announcement that he is gay in January together with Griffith and Bardell’s announcements at the weekend brings the total of LGB MPs and peers to 35.

This means the UK’s parliament has more gay members than any other in the world.

In a joint opinion piece for The Independent on Sunday, Mundell and Chris Bryant, shadow Leader of the House of Commons, note the improvements in Parliament, but warn: “LGBT young people in Britain still face stigma and bullying. Rates of suicide and depression are significantly higher among members of the LGBT community.”

The Independent also reports that parliamentary clerks have been asked to look into commissioning a painting of LGB MPs, to recognise this as the most diverse parliament in British history.

28 of the 35 posed for a picture on Saturday to celebrate LGBT History Month.
