Lotus News Channel, an Indian news station, has hired India’s first ever transgender anchor.

Padmini Prakash, 31, made history by becoming the first ever trans prime time news anchor in India. This huge step comes five month’s after India started legally recognising third gender citizens.

Prakash first got her start in television working on Indian soap operas. She is also an accomplished dancer and has also been involved in activism for transgender and other sexual minority causes.

Lotus News Channel chairman GKS Selvakumar told Times of India, “We are supportive of Padmini because she is very hard-working.

“After initial trials, we were convinced that she had the potential to be an excellent news anchor.”

Prakash herself added that she was initially nervous in her new role, saying, “I was very worried because I also had to focus on my diction and maintain a steady narrative pace to ensure that there was clarity and viewers could understand me.”

Congratulations, Padmini!
