An American in Dublin

Hey everyone! I'm Steven from Lawrence, Kansas in the United States. I just graduated from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) and rather than getting a real job back home, it seemed like more fun to live abroad for a while. Maybe, I'm just putting off the inevitable for as long as possible, but I like to think I'm furthering my cultural education. So I stored all my things in my brothers tiny attic, packed a couple of very full suitcases and came to Dublin. I've only been here a little while, but I can already tell it's going to be quite an adventure! I'll be providing an insight into the gay community through the eyes of a foreigner, though I somehow doubt I'll be tap dancing down George Street à la Gene Kelly (thanks Brian for that image), but who knows- I've taken a liking to certain Irish drinks since I've been here; one too many and I might be tap dancing all over the city, if with slightly less dignity than Mr. Kelly.

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Dearest readers,

My time with you must come to an end. I know, I know…I will miss you all just as much as you miss me. I suppose I could keep writing, but somehow An American in Dublin doesn’t work as well if the American is in a different city. Weird, right?

I will be moving shortly to live in Nantes, France. Very exciting, but also very nerve-wracking. It’s been a while since I’ve had to speak French, and I’m a little rusty. In fact, a group of French women came into Honest to Goodness, and I thought: what a great opportunity to practice! My attempts failed however; not a single one of them responded to me. They all stared at me with blank looks on their faces before simply turning to leave. Hence: my nerves are wracked. Good news though: I’ll be teaching English to 11-14 year olds and, while not my favorite age group, I’m required to speak in English at all times to them. I think I can handle that.

So, my time in Dublin is finished. I will very much miss the city, the shouts of “knacker” permeating the air and being asked, “what’s the craic.” I want to thank all of you for making my stay in Dublin 100 percent awesome. Who knows, I could have actually spoken with some of you who read this. I hope that I have proved as entertaining for those privileged few as this city has for me.

I have always hated drawn out farewells, so I will leave it at this: Thank you Dublin; there will always be a special place in my heart for the Irish way of life.

Looking forward to coming back and visiting the gay community,

An American in Dublin
