Outburst queer arts festival is back for its tenth birthday with an amazing ten-day programme that closes with iconic queer filmmaker John Waters

Outburst, Belfast’s cutting-edge international queer arts festival, celebrates its tenth birthday this November with a jam-packed ten-day programme of theatre, performance, comedy, visual art, literature and much, much more.

One of the most eagerly-awaited shows is Nando Messias’ Shoot The Sissy (November 19, Black Box). Nando, who returns to the festival by popular demand, explores the everyday reality of danger that many queer people face, pulling the audience directly into the firing line and asks: “Do queer lives matter?” Described as “a disturbingly beautiful freak show,” Shoot the Sissy is one OUTBURST performance not to be missed.

Among the other gems on offer are Jo Clifford’s acclaimed one-woman Evangelho Segundo Jesus, Rainha Do Céu (The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven) on November 11 and 12 (Upstairs at The MAC), which features Jesus re-embodied in the present time as a trans woman from the fringes of São Paulo; comedy duo Bourgeois and Maurice’s latest satire How To Save the World Without Really Trying (November 11, Black Box); and Penny Arcade’s provocative Longing Last Longer (November 12, Black Box).

The festival kicks off on November 10 with the launch of the Caribbean Queer Visualities exhibition (November 11 -January 7), and closes with iconic queer filmmaker John Waters (pictured) performing his one-man show This Filthy World (November 19, Lyric).
