This month Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI) will hold a workshop exploring transgender issues within the context of the family.

The workshop, hosted by Vanessa Lacey (pictured above), will explore a broad view of transgender issues including a brief history, complexity of identities and experiences of trans people and their families.

Organisers say there will be a mix of presentation delivery, reflexivity and plenty opportunity for interaction through small group work as well as larger discussion, which will include some personal experiences of the presenter, Vanessa.

Vanessa’s background is psychology-based which organisers say will lend the proceedings a unique approach, as she will speak from personal experience, together with empirically-based research and psychological insight.

The afternoon event will specifically focus on family-based interventions which are an essential element of TENI‘s work. There will as also be discussion of the theory of Ambiguous Loss as a framework for addressing gender transition in families.

The workshop takes place on Friday, April 21 from 10am – 4pm (registration at 9:30) at Wynn’s Hotel, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1. Price for Family Therapy Association of Ireland members: €70, Non-Members: €80 Student Member: €50.
