Thousands Turn Out For Strike 4 Repeal

Thousands of people took time off work to Strike 4 Repeal today at O'Connell Bridge.

Today Strike 4 Repeal took place at Dublin’s O’Connell Bridge. Thousands turned up to urge the government to call a referendum to remove the eight amendment and make legal provision for abortion in Ireland.

The crowd was awash with the iconic black and white Repeal jumpers created by the Repeal Project. Protestors also brought their homemade signs to show their dissatisfaction with the current legislation.

There will also be a March 4 Repeal this evening starting at 5:30pm, but until then here are some of the handmade signs from the protest.

It’s A Sign

First up is the Hunreal Issues inspired Repeal the Eight sign which portrays a middle finger with pink nails over a pink 8.

Alongside clothing featuring the familiar love heart created by artist Maser, the middle finger over an eight can also be purchased from The Hunreal Issues shop – #IAmHunreal – with all profits going to the RepealEight.ie.

Next up is this double whammy of signs protesting the religious overtones of the eight amendment and the infringement of autonomy that such legislation entails with these two signs.

The first says “Keep your rosaries off my ovaries,” and the second says “Think outside my box” with the ‘x’ in box drawn over the number eight.

The next sign harkens to the recent history of Northern America in which anti-miscegenation fanatics of the twentieth century have been left in the past.

“Be on the right side of history. Repeal,” the sign reads in stark black and white which echoes the Repeal Project imagery and the Strike 4 Repeal logo.

Finally, one person’s sign aims to not only be inclusive of cisgender women, but also to include trans, non-binary, or gender queer “sisters” in the rhetoric of the Repeal campaign. The glittering, multi-coloured sign reads “Support your sisters not just your cis-ters.”

Even more are expected to turn up to the March 4 Repeal scheduled for 5:30pm. The march will begin at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin 1 and end outside The Dáil.

If you’re at the march, use the hashtags #Strike4Repeal and #March4Repeal to get the issue trending across social media.
