Trump used a congratulatory call to Leo Varadkar as an opportunity to 'flirt' with RTÉ's Caitríona Perry.

US President Donald Trump yesterday called Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to congratulate him on his “great victory”, using the opportunity to simultaneously attempt to ‘flirt’ with an RTÉ reporter.

Trump called the Taoiseach yesterday to congratulate him on his “great victory” and the two spoke for 10 – 15 minutes. The pair reportedly discussed Brexit, undocumented Irish in America and climate change.

“We have so many people from Ireland in this country,” said Trump, who this week stands accused of having a doctored copy of Time magazine hanging at several of his golf clubs. “I know so many of them too. I feel I know all of them.”

The BBC reports that the Taoiseach let the line ring for 90 seconds before picking up the receiver, but he later claimed there was “no significance” in the delay.

During the phone call, Trump beckoned to RTÉ’s Washington correspondent Caitríona Perry to say hello to the Taoiseach, and told Varadkar “we have all of this Irish, beautiful Irish press here” before asking Perry where she was from.

“She has a nice smile on her face so I bet she treats you well,” said the US president in front of a packed Oval Office.

“One minute we were outside the window and the next minute I’m meeting the President of The United States,” Perry later told RTÉ. Ordinarily shooting is done outside the White House, explained Perry, but she and her crew were invited inside to witness Trump’s call.

“When we went in he was already on the phone but I managed to catch his eye and he called me over.”

Varadkar did not invite Trump to visit Ireland but the two agreed to meet during the White House’s annual St Patrick’s Day event next year.
