A Facebook moderator contacted Trevisan, who is straight but supports LGBT rights, and told her the photo broke rules regarding “nudity and pornography”. After the user refused to take the shot down, she was told her account would be suspended. A representative from Facebook spoke on the issue to Buzzfeed, explaining, “In an effort to quickly and efficiently process reports we receive, our community operations team reviews many reports every week, occasionally we make a mistake and block a piece of content we shouldn’t have”.

Trevisan suffered further negativity when she received abusive comments claiming the image was inappropriate because there are “young children to protect” . One user also labelled the shot “disgusting”.

The user’s profile has since been reinstated, with Trevisan setting the photo that caused her suspension as her profile image. Speaking about the incident, the 28 year-old mother said, “What was the harm with this photo when so many like this can be found on Google? When I see people of the same gender kissing, I only see love, nothing else”.

She showed concern for younger users upon her return, posting, “I’m 28 years-old and can fight back – but if that same photo had been posted by a 16 year-old girl how would she feel?”
