'Xena: Warrior Princess' Is Totally Gay In 2016 Reboot

Making our 90s dreams come true, Xena and ‘gal pal’ Gabrielle will be an openly gay couple in the 2016 reboot, says screenwriter.

It was pretty much assumed that the badass warrior, Xena was hooking up with her ‘best friend’ Gabrielle in the 90s fantasy cult classic. Because of their on-screen chemistry, the pair have reached ‘lesbian icon’ status among queer fans, despite their sexuality never been confirmed. Sure, even lead actor Lucy Lawless described Xena as “definitely” gay to Lesbian News in 2003.

Since it was announced that NBC plans to resurrect Xena: Warrior Princess, fans rejoiced at some more on-screen homoerotic undertones between the lead Xena and her lover best friend. Well, looks like those undertones will be overtones this time around, according to producer and screenwriter, Javier Grillo-Marxuach.

“Xena will be a very different show made for very different reasons. There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually [sic] in first-run syndication in the 1990s,” screenwriter Javier Grillo-Marxuach wrote in a Tumblr post.

“It will also express my view of the world—which is only further informed by what is happening right now—and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.”

Xena is expected to air sometime this year, but to hold you over until then, check out some of Xena and Gabrielle’s best moments.

Swoon!
