10 Questions With Zrazy

Zrazy

Lesbian duo, Zrazy, made up of Carole Nelson and Maria Walsh, have been part of the Irish music scene for over two successful decades. As they work on their long-awaited sixth album, the ladies take time out to sit in The Outmost’s ten questions chair.

Hey Zrazy! As an out lesbian band since 1992, have you experienced anti-gay discrimination in the music industry?

Apart from the RTÉ banning the video for our first single I’m In Love With Mother Nature because it had two women slow dancing, not too much that was obvious. Homophobia is subtle… the opportunity that doesn’t come, the record company that says it already has a lesbian act… though come to think of it, that is pretty obvious homophobia!

Who are the two biggest influences on your music?

Hmmm, hard to name just two but here goes: For Carole it’s Joni Mitchell, for Maria it’s Grace Jones. That kind of describes our different personalities.

What’s Zrazy’s Unique Selling Point?

Maria’s hair.

Describe the album you’re working on in five words.

The Art of Happy Accidents

What is Zrazy’s proudest moment?

Winning a GLAMA, (Gay and Lesbian American Music Award) in New York.

If you could co-opt any current artist/musician from the world into the band for one gig only, who would it be?

Beyoncé, because a) we’d sell out Croke Park for five nights (!), and b) we could learn some new moves.

Name five famous people, living or dead, you’d invite to a dinner party at your place?

Ruby Wax, Miss Panti, Annie Leibowitz (to take the photos), Bette Midler, and Ella Fitzgerald for a few songs. A girls’ night in!

Who would play both of you in the Hollywood biopic of your life, and what would it be called?

Maria: Tilda Swinton. Carole: Helen Mirren. Starring in: ‘Without Me You Are Nothing’

If the world were ending tomorrow, what would each of you do today?

Carole: Recreational drugs. Maria: Message in a bottle from Dun Laoghaire pier, having drunk the bottle first, of course. Then watch the sun go down.

The meaning of life according to Zrazy?

All you need is love… da di da da da
