Troye Sivan has dropped the new ‘Party’ music video, offering another taste of his upcoming album She’s the Best, and this time the singer is taking fans to a very different kind of dance floor.
‘Party’ is the second single from Sivan’s fourth studio album, following the release of its title track last month. While ‘She’s the Best’ came with a star-studded video led by fellow Australian Nicole Kidman and RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby, Sivan has gone in a completely different direction for the follow-up.
The music video was filmed at a castle in Berkeley, England, and it transports viewers to a medieval vibrant party. Sivan plays a knight in shining armour, surrounded by dancers, feasting, and increasingly chaotic celebrations as the night unfolds.
The track also features a familiar sound, sampling Madonna’s 2000 hit ‘Music’.
The video opens with the recognisable voice of Sir Ian McKellen, who provides dramatic narration that sets the scene for the celebrations. McKellen and Sivan first worked together when the singer was a teenager, appearing in a production of Waiting for Godot in Perth.
Speaking about inviting the legendary gay actor to take part, Sivan said McKellen’s involvement represented the idea of “queer lineage” and older generations creating spaces for those who come after them.
Sivan explained that the idea behind the video grew from conversations with filmmaker and photographer Gordon von Steiner about the importance of nightlife, particularly for queer people. For many, he said, clubs can be among the first spaces where LGBTQ+ people find themselves surrounded by others like them.
That idea led the pair to wonder what queer partying might have looked like hundreds of years ago, resulting in the video’s medieval setting.
Some familiar names also appear behind ‘Party’. Sivan co-wrote the track with longtime collaborator Leland, who has worked on RuPaul’s Drag Race, as well as Sivan’s brother Tyde Levi and others.
With its choreography-heavy visuals and sweaty celebration at the centre of the action, Troye Sivan’s ‘Party’ music video may feel familiar to fans of the singer’s Something to Give Each Other era, only this time, ‘Rush’ has traded the nightclub for a castle.
She’s the Best is due to be released on October 9. Check out the new music video for ‘Party’ by Troye Sivan below.
