BAFTA host, Stephen Fry seems to have removed himself from Twitter after making an “offensive” joke at the awards ceremony last night.
Stephen Fry was met with a barrage of criticism after calling costume designer Jenny Beavan a “bag lady” on stage after she accepted an award for her work on Mad Max: Fury Road.
Fry commented at the podium, “Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to the awards dressed like a bag lady.”
Even though Fry later stated that Beavan was a good friend and “got the joke”, Twitter quickly went nuts, with many calling Fry a “misogynist”.
Uncool of Stephen Fry to say bafta winning costume designer dressed like a ‘bag lady’. I was thinking it was cool she wore what she wanted.

If Stephen Fry doesn’t want people to be upset about him being a misogynist he shouldn’t be a misogynist (full stop) on national television

Stephen Fry’s “dressed as a bag lady” joke about the winner of costume design was horrid. True colours, there. #BAFTA

Not impressed by @stephenfry‘s ‘bag lady’ comment. Uncalled for #BAFTA #bafta2016

Fry lost his patience with the criticism and posted a selfie with Beavan at the BAFTA afterparty, along with two other tweets, before deleting his account altogether.
“Will all you sanctimonious f*****s f**k the f**k off Jenny Beavan is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet.”
And, “So just a word to the tragic figures who think calling Jenny Bevan a bag lady was an insult. She’s a dear friend and she got it. Derrr.”
Do you think Fry went too far, or were Twitter-critics overreacting?
