And the Oscar for Best Get Your Hands Off My Man-ing goes to: Dustin Lance Black who berated Sam Smith for not only erroneously claiming to be the first openly-gay man to win an Oscar, but for texting his fiancé, baby-faced diver Tom Daley.

The drama kicked off when Smith, who won the Best Original Song Oscar on Sunday night for his co-written James Bond Spectre theme ‘Writing’s On The Wall’, took to the stage, launching into a self-congratulatory speech in which he erroneously paraphrased Ian McKellan’s recent comments about the failure of any openly gay man to win an Oscar.

McKellan had in fact opined that no openly gay actor had won the coveted Best Actor award.

Seeming to believe that he was in fact the first gay man to ever win an Oscar, Smith said “If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world. I stand here tonight as a proud gay man.”

Little did Smith know that not only is he is not the first gay to have won an Oscar, he’s not even the first one to win one for Best Song. Elton John, Stephen Sondheim, Howard Ashman and Melissa Etheridge have all beaten him to it.

Dustin Lance Black – who won best original screenplay for 2009’s Milk – was quick to correct Smith, and tell him to step off his man.

“Hey @SamSmithWorld, if you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiance,” Black tweeted, including a link to his acceptance speech at 2009’s ceremony.

According to The Guardian, Smith was informed of his faux pas backstage at the Oscars soon after receiving his prize. He responded: “Shit! Fuck that! Two’s my lucky number, so it’s all good. Who was the other person?”
