Over the coming weekend and months, hundreds of events will celebrate those who were involved in the Easter Rising 1916, and the historic moment itself.

1. High Treason: Roger Casement

Until October 2, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin

Sir John Lavery’s monumental painting, ‘High Treason: The Appeal of Roger Casement, The Court of Criminal Appeal, 17 and 18 July 1916’ moves from Kings Inns to be the centrepiece of this historic exhibition, which includes artist Alan Phelan’s film, Our Kind, which imagines a future for Casement had he not been executed in 1916 where he is in exile in Norway with his lover, Adler Christensen.

2. McKenna’s Fort

March 21 to April 2, The New Theatre, Dublin, 7.30pm nightly

3. Glória at The GPO

March 28, 11am, GPO, O’Connell St, Dublin

Glória will perform for half an hour from 11am at the scene of the Rising, the GPO on O’Connell Street.

4. Helena Molony, Abbey Rebel

March 28, 3pm, Abbey Theatre, Dublin

Author and poet Nell Regan talks about her new book, Helena Molony: A Radical Life, the first substantive biography about this remarkable actor, lesbian and activist of the Rising.

5. The Story of Teacher, Sniper and Socialist, Margaret Skinnider

March 28, 5pm, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin

Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh tells the story of 1916 sniper, gun-runner and socialist Margaret Skinnider, who refused to dress as a woman, and was shot during the Rising while attempting to burn down houses on nearby Harcourt Street.

6. Raising the White Flag: The Story of Nurse O’Farrell

March 28, 2.30pm, Royal College of Physicians

Ian Kelly, grand-nephew of Elizabeth O’Farrell shares her story and family memories handed down through the generations.

7. Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside

March 26 to 31, Ballina Arts Centre

Exhibition celebrating the life and work of rebel doctor, Kathleen Lynn, active suffragette, labour activist, lesbian, and outpost commander on Easter Monday 1916.

8. Lesbians of 1916

April 21, 7.30pm, LINC, Cork (women only)

Marie Mulholland, author of a biography of Kathleen Lynn, gives a talk about the women who loved women on the frontlines in 1916.

9. The Humanizer

May 20 to August 28, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin

A new commission for IMMA by British/Japanese artist Simon Fujiwara explores Casement’s contradictory life through the conventions of the Hollywood narrative, presenting a bizarre biopic of a perfect gay hero for our age.

10. Féile Fáilte

July 23, Banna Strand, Kerry

Day-long festival re-imagining the Ireland, and the welcome, that Roger Casement might have dreamt of when he came ashore in 1916, featuring dance performances, an evening céilí, a night-time beach disco and a midnight spectacle to re-imagine Casement’s ill-fated landing.
