On Saturday night, a trans woman was groped and raped in the bathroom of The Stonewall Inn, New York’s historic gay landmark.

Police in New York city are appealing for information in relation to an assault which took place in The Stonewall Inn, the site of the Stonewall riots in 1969 which sparked the modern gay rights movement.

The incident happened when the suspect allegedly pushed his way into the restroom after the victim, and said that he needed to wash his hands. The man then groped and raped the victim before fleeing the bar, but returned an hour later.

The victim was brought to a nearby hospital to receive treatment.

The suspect is in his 30s to 40s, hispanic, and is known to be a regular in the famous Greenwich Village bar on Saturday nights. Police released images caught on CCTV which clearly show the suspect.

On Monday, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio commented on the incident, “Look, it’s a very disturbing incident taking place in a site that is very important historically, and where something good happened in terms of creating more opportunity for people to live their lives. To see a violent incident like this is very, very troubling.”
