Miss Saigon U.K. Tour

After an award winning spell on the West End, Cameron Mackintosh’s hit new touring production of the legendary MISS SAIGON is coming to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. This thrilling production is hot off the success of the WhatsOnStage Awards, taking home a record breaking 9 awards (including best show). It’s no surprise; this stunning production pushes the boundaries of what a touring producing can achieve and offers viewers an epic theatrical experience.

A modern take on Puccinci’s opera Madama Butterfly,  Miss Saigon is set in 1970 in the sleazy slums of Saigon during the height of the Vietnam War. Kim, an orphaned Vietnamese girl now working as a prostitute, falls for Chris, a desolate American GI. Their love is challenged by the realities of war and the tragedy that ensues.

Produced by the legendary Cameron Mackintosh (of Les Miserables fame),  this is a musical experience like no other. This production highlights exactly why Miss Saigon deserves its status as one of the best musicals of our time. With a cast of over 60 hypnotically talented actors, the epic proportions of this show are enough to blow the audience away. A booming orchestra, intricate set pieces and a fresh take on the iconic helicopter scene make for a new, dynamic interpretation of on the longest running shows in the history of Broadway.

“This is a musical experience like no other.”

This is a musical full of show-stopping moments from the start. Opening with a heart-wrenching rendition of The Movie In My Mind, sung by the excellent Na-Young Jeon, who plays one of the many showgirls who long to escape from their lives in Dreamland, a Vietnamese strip club in Saigon. American GIs flock to Dreamland for the local girls who are pimped out by the sleazy, yet charming Engineer.

It’s here that we meet Kim, played by the monumental Sooha Kim who gives the performance of a lifetime. Delivering show-stopper after show-stopper, Sooha Kim leaves you awe-struck. The depth that she brings to Kim is extraordinary, and guarantees to leave you feeling truly heart broken by the end of her whirlwind performance. Her breath-taking renditions of numbers like Thuys Death/You Will Not Touch Him and Sun & Moon will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

As American GI Chris, Ashley Gilmour performs Why God with a power that makes you sympathise with a soldier who has been shaken by the horrors of war. Other characters, like Red Concepcion’s Engineer, offer comedic relief from the weight of theses character’s harrowing journeys.

The snake-eyed Engineer keeps the audience on their toes. His fiery rendition of American Dream leaves you wanting to get up out of your seat and join in the kick-line. From soulful solo ballads to dynamite dance numbers, the tone of this show changes so rapidly that the audience can’t help but become entangled in the characters emotions along the way.

This production of Miss Saigon is a show for the ages. The war wracked lives we see these characters live out on stage feels as relevant today as ever. So here’s to you Miss Saigon; sun, moon and all.
