Thor Star Says Expositional Bisexuality Scene Was Cut from Ragarnok

Thor: Ragarnok actress Tessa Thompson says that a scene confirming her character's bisexuality was cut from the final movie.

Thompson took to Twitter last month to respond to complaints about changes to Valkyrie’s original costume and while doing so confirmed that the warrior goddess is bisexual.

“She’s bi,” the actress wrote. “And yes, she cares very little about what men think of her. What a joy to play!”

Recent story arcs have seen Valkyrie’s character romantically involved with archeologist Annabelle Riggs.

In a feature in this month’s Rolling Stone, Thompson says that she even pitched the idea of making movie-Valkyrie bisexual to director Taika Waititi:

Thompson even summoned the courage to pitch Waititi on making Valkyrie bisexual, based on her comic book relationship with anthropologist Annabelle Riggs. “There’s this great illustration of them in a kiss,” swoons Thompson, and while Valkyrie has yet to meet Annabelle in her Hollywood timeline – and who knows if she’ll get to – she convinced Waititi to shoot a glimpse of a woman walking out of Valkyrie’s bedroom. He kept it in the film as long as he could; eventually the bit had to be cut because it distracted from the scene’s vital exposition.

Although the scene was later cut from the movie Thompson mentally maintained the character’s sexuality in her portrayal. “There’s a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who’s just been slain,” she told Rolling Stone. “In my mind, that was my lover.”

To date, Thor: Ragarnok has been well-received by fans and critics alike, earning a 93% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and grossing $427 million worldwide on its opening weekend.
