Between Courtney Act’s new dating show, ITV’s drama Butterfly and Channel 4’s The Bisexual, this upcoming TV season is looking to be one of the best yet in terms of LGBT+ representation and the small screen. Here’s what you can look forward to this month:

ITV’s new drama Butterfly tells the story of Maxine, a transgender teenager, and her family as they navigate the issues trans youth and their families face. The series, which stars Anna Friel and Emmet J Scanlon, has received praise for its thoughtful portrayal of trans youth. Speaking after a screening of Butterfly, trans celebrity Paris Lees described the program as the “best thing that’s happened for the trans community in years”.

Lees spoke about the importance of representation:

“I threw away my television ten years ago because every time you saw a trans person on TV when I was growing up, we were either presented as an object for ridicule, pity or disgust.

“This [show] is about making sure kids are loved and supported for who they say they are.”

Butterfly will debut later this month on ITV.

Channel 4’s new comedy-drama The Bisexual stars Desiree Akhavan as Leila, a bisexual New Yorker who has just moved to London. Akhavan, who directed Appropriate Behaviour and The Miseducation of Cameron Post, has said that the show explores the differences between dating men and women from the perspective of someone who finds herself – for the first time – doing both. 

The Bisexual starts Wednesday October 10 at 10 pm.

Courtney Act’s new dating show, The Bi Life, will be the UK’s first dating series to focus exclusively on bi and pansexual singletons. The Aussie drag superstar and singer said:

“People are obsessed with dating shows – look at the success of First Dates and Love Island. The cool thing about The Bi Life is that there is something for everyone.”

The Bi Life premieres October 25 at 9 pm on E! UK and Ireland.
