Viral Video Shows School Staff Force Toilet Door Open On Trans Student In Girl's Bathroom

In the video, three staff members can be seen inside the school's bathroom while a trans student is using the facility.

A still from the video which shows three adults inside the bathroom.

A trans student at Osseo High School in Minnesota was using the girl’s bathroom when several members of staff entered the room and picked the lock of the cubicle she was using.

In a video that has since gone viral on Twitter, staff members can be seen to be using a rod to forcefully unlock the stall from outside. The door is then swung open while the student is still sitting on the toilet. The video was shared by Twitter user and advocate Keindra4Humanity, and has since received over 4,500 retweets.

In the video the student describes the situation as it happens:

“I’m using the bathroom right now and they just violated me.

“There’s no concern of no safety just because I’m using the bathroom.”

After the door is forced open, the student says:

“I’m so scared and violated right now. They just walked into the bathroom while I was using the bathroom for no reason.”

The student posted another video on Facebook in which she identifies the teachers who had a part to play in the opening of the bathroom cubicle door.

Subsequent reports on social media suggest that the student was then forced to leave school following the incident.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Osseo Schools said:

“Social media posts are significantly misrepresenting the incident and the staff that works very hard every day to help ensure an inclusive school where all students feel welcome, respected and safe. We wish we could provide additional details about this incident but are committed to protecting the student’s right to data privacy.”

The incident points to America’s nationwide obsession with where trans people can and cannot go to the bathroom. In 2016, the Department of Justice and Education stated that schools that receive federal funding must treat a student’s gender identity as their sex. However, a year later this policy was revoked.
