US network ABC has commissioned a TV series based on the life of gay football star, Robbie Rogers.

Men in Shorts, created by Rude Awakening‘s Claudia Lonow and Desperate Housewives writer Jordon Nardino will be a half-hour comedy series based on Rogers’ experience as a gay professional football player. Rogers himself is also credited as a producer.

Lonow told Deadline that the series will have elements of both workplace and family comedies, and will focus on how teammates interact with the main character after he has come out.

She said, “To me, a sports team locker room is a workplace we haven’t seen before.”

Robbie Rogers, 27, came out in 2013 while announcing his retirement from the sport. He said he quit playing professional to avoid media attention because of his sexuality.

He later came out of retirement and signed a contract with L.A. Galaxy, and rose to becoming one of their key players.
