“Mr Funny Man” Al Porter will be joining Today FM’s lunchtime lineup next month

Al Porter will join the Today FM team as their lunchtime show presenter the Dublin based radio station announced this morning.

Porter joined Dermot & Dave in the studio this morning a little after 11am where it was revealed on Facebook Live that he would be taking over the Today FM lunchtime show in February.

The comedian and presenter has just finished his 2016 comedy tour of Ireland Al Porter At Large: The Honeymoon Tour and admitted that he is beyond delighted to join Today FM.

“Delighted is an understatement,” Porter tweeted. “Can’t wait to join the @todayfm family and chat to you at lunchtime!”

“Today is a huge day for me,” the comedian commented. “I grew up listening to radio and anytime I’ve been into Today FM, whether it’s to talk to Ian, Matt or Dermot & Dave, who have been interviewing me since I was a kid, I’ve enjoyed each and every visit!”

“I’ve come to realise that it’s such a personal and intimate thing to have a relationship with listeners and over the past 12 months I think people have gotten to know me better.

“I brought people into my home at the end of last year and now I am looking forward to being in THEIR homes every day, not as a comedian but as a friend.”

Speaking on air, Porter asks listeners to give him a chance and remain patient while he settles into his new position.

“I totally empathise with people who might be going ‘Aww janie now, I don’t know about that.’ I would ask them to maybe take a chance on me. You know I’ve never done my own radio show before so be patient with me. I might make a few mistakes but I hope that we can build a proper relationship.”

Porter will begin presenting the 12-2:30pm lunchtime show on Today FM from Monday, 13 February.

Last year, Al Porter gave his time to host the Ding Dong! event, where Yes Equality canvassers got together to share their stories from the marriage referendum campaign in 2015 on the anniversary of the Yes vote.
