UCD students are set to vote on whether to impeach current student union president Katie Ascough, after she removed information to abortion services from a Freshers' week magazine.

The calls to impeach Ascough – a vociferous anti-abortion campaigner whose father Tom is a board member of the Iona Institute – came after it was revealed that she ordered the reprinting of UCD Freshers’ magazine ‘Winging It‘ with a page contain information about abortion services in the UK removed.

The cost of the reprinting is estimated to have cost the student union €8,000, reports The Irish Times. Though Ascough cited potential legal liability for her decision to order the reprint, a spokesperson for the group seeking to impeach her says the excised information has been freely available to UCD student for 20 years.

The Times also reports that a breach of the Abortion Information Act of 1995 is an offence under law and can result in fines of up to €1,900 – less than 25% of the cost of reprinting the entire magazine.

The petition calling for a vote to impeach Ascough – who was elected as student union head in March of this year – received over 1,300 signatures in a single day. A total of 835 signatures of students are need to trigger an impeachment vote.

The collected 1,300 signatures will be turned over to the UCD next week, where it will be verified that each signatory is a current student of the college. After this, the impeachment vote must be held within the next four weeks.
