Mr Gay Ireland is now open for new applicants for the upcoming 2019/2020 competition.

Mr Gay Ireland

The applications to become the new Mr Gay Ireland 2019/2020 are open and here is everything you need to know on how to apply.

MGI is a civic and visibility project founded by Brian Merriman and run by volunteers from the International Dublin Gay Theatre Festival.

According to MGI national producer, Brian Merriman: “Mr Gay Ireland has a proud track record in visibility throughout the island of Ireland. We are committed to raising HIV awareness and funds for HIV charities.

“Over the years our contestants have made a great contribution at a local level to these causes and we hope to select another fine ambassador this year to succeed Guilherme who has worked hard to present a positive gay role model for an inclusive Ireland.

“We also hope our new Mister will work with us to rejuvenate the work we began in 2005 nationally, that has contributed almost €160,000 to good Gay causes in the interim. We welcome applications from Northern Ireland too where work still is ongoing to achieve equality.”

The organisation aims to promote visibility for young gay people and safe-sex awareness in cities, towns and communities, especially in rural Ireland. Contestants take part in an intensive process of confidence building, gay rights advocacy, networking, civil society engagement and more.

Speaking about the platform given by MGI, current Mr Gay Ireland Guilherme Souza says: “See this opportunity as a lifetime experience and certainly something that you will never forget and will make you a better version of yourself.”

GCN has been a vital, free-of-charge information service for Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community since 1988.

During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.

GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
