An epic twist on Frank L. Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, the first full-length trailer for Jon M. Chu’s two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is finally here, giving eager fans a closer look at the upcoming film.

The film’s first full-length trailer from Universal Pictures dropped on Wednesday, May 15, following the release of the film’s initial teaser trailer during Super Bowl LVIII on February 11.

The two trailers offer a glimpse at Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba as they take to the skies in the wonderful land of Oz that some viewers might remember from Judy Garland’s iconic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.

Both the upcoming film and the Broadway musical of the same name, however, are actually based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which itself pulls inspiration from Garland’s film and Baum’s 1900 novel.

In addition to plenty of magic, gorgeous costumes, and a blossoming enemies-to-friends storyline between Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba, the first full-length trailer for Wicked also gives viewers a closer look at characters like Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh’s Madame Morrible, and Ethan Slater’s Boq.

Fans also got an extended look at classic Wicked musical numbers like ‘Popular’ and ‘Defying Gravity’ in the latest trailer.

The video follows Erivo’s Elphaba as she arrives at Shiz University, a magic school in Oz, where she is forced into an unwilling friendship with her roommate Glinda (Grande). Unfortunately, Elphaba’s green skin makes her an outsider from the start.

Elphaba’s skill with magic, however, gets her noticed by Yeoh’s Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Shiz, and land her a ticket to visit the Wizard. At the end of the trailer, we see Erivo calling on Grande to join her on the train journey to Oz.

Wicked: Part One, directed by Jon M. Chu, will debut to audiences worldwide on November 27, with the subsequent Wicked: Part Two film to follow in 2025.
