ShouOut has launched Faithfully Queer, a resource to show the connection between being LGBTQ+ and a person of faith. The guide aims to challenge misconceptions and offer a better understanding of the complexities that come from being both queer and religious.

In its pages, you can find powerful and insightful information, ranging from testimonials from LGBTQ+ people of faith, a list of organisations that offer support, an advice column, and examples of LGBTQ+ people of faith and allies.

Religious LGBTQ+ people might faith multiple challenges, ranging from a lack of representation to discrimination. Most times people assume being religious is inherently anti-LGBTQ+ and vice versa.

This is why Faithfully Queer guide states that nobody shouldn’t have to choose between their queer identity and faith, because, for many people, religion plays a significant role in how they live their lives. It shapes values, morals and culture.

Faithfully Queer comes from the need to fight against the misconception that LGBTQ+ identities and religion cannot mix. While it can be true that some LGBTQ+ people might struggle with accepting themselves if they come from a religious background, or that religious family members might feel conflicted with accepting LGBTQ+ relatives, Faithfully Queer proves it is possible to bring all aspects of oneself together in joyful and exciting ways.

Religion can even guide some people through challenging times, including discovering their sexual identity. Teachings of faith can be a powerful tool to understand and accept ourselves completely, with kindness and without judgment.

Former President of Ireland March McAleese is quoted in the resource, saying: “For young people who are experiencing that kind of fear of…something outside of them saying, ‘but you can’t be (gay) because God says there is no such thing…’ You have to have the courage to say…this is who I am, and if this is who I am, this is how God made me.”

Whether you’re LGBTQ+ and religious, an ally, or just curious to learn more, Faithfully Queer is for you! The resource is available on ShoutOut’s website, so take a look and be part of the progress.
