Cate Blanchett has revealed that she has had numerous romantic relationships with women.

While promoting her upcoming film Carol, Cate Blanchett revealed to Variety magazine that she has had relationships with “many” women.

Blanchett was asked by Variety if this was her first turn as a lesbian and coyly replied, “On film — or in real life?” When pressed to answer if she had past relationships with women, she responded: “Yes. Many times.”

Goddess.

She was also asked about how labels for own sexuality, admitting, “I never thought about it.”

“I don’t think Carol thought about it,” she said of the character. In preparation, Blanchett read a number of banned books from the era, “I read a lot of girl-on-girl books from the period.”

Carol, directed by Todd Haynes, is based on the 1952 novel by Patricia Highsmith, The Price of Salt. It tells the story of Carol, an older married woman, who falls in love with a younger shop assistant, Therese, played by Rooney Mara.

Blanchett was asked how Carol would react to LGBT rights these days, “Her sexuality isn’t politicized.” She believes that Carol would quietly go about her business and not necessarily be a proactive part of the community. “I think there are a lot of people that exist like that who don’t feel the need to shout things from the rafters.”

Carol will premiere at Cannes on May 17.
