“There is absolutely no conflict with accepting who I am and following Jesus,” says Christian rock star, Trey Pearson.
One of a recent spate of Christian superstars stepping out of the closet, Trey Pearson, lead singer of popular rock band Everyday Sunday, has revealed that he is gay.
In a letter released to his fans, the singer said: “I have tried not to be gay for more than 20 years of my life,” adding “it’s my life. This is me being authentic and real with myself and other people. This is a part of who I am.”
Prior to coming out Pearson was married with two daughters. His wife, Lauren, is accepting of his decision to open up about his sexuality. Pearson describes her as “the most supportive, understanding, loving and gracious person I could ever ask for.”
The two have said they will stay friends and try to raise raise their daughters in a healthy, loving environment.
Other Christina stars that have come out in recent years include Vicky Beecher, a highly influential Christian singer songwriter and Anthony Williams, a Grammy-nominated Gospel singer. While Beecher and Williams have seen their sales plummet, Pearson remains upbeat. “I realise a lot of gate-holders in that industry may want to never play my songs again, due to fear — but I also think the world is changing — and I think there are a lot of people out there that want to be a part of this conversation.”
As to whether their is any contradiction between being both gay and a devout Christian, Pearson thinks study of the scripture indicates that there is nothing in the Bible that strictly prohibits the kind of loving committed gay relationships we are familiar with in modern life.
