The most notorious assassins in the United States gather on stage to pursue a twisted American Dream, in a show that lays bare the lives of nine people who assassinated (or tried to assassinate) the President of the United States, from Abraham Lincoln to JFK.
It is a bold, original, dark and very funny musical. “We’re not going to apologize for dealing with such a volatile subject,” Mr Sondheim told the New York Times ahead of the first production in 1991. “Nowadays, virtually everything goes.” This is the first Sondheim musical directed by Selina Cartmell since her critically acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd at the Gate Theatre in 2007.
Assassins is the sixth production in The Outsider, Selina Cartmell’s first season as Director of the Gate Theatre. The Outsider season has seen a bold and eclectic range of stories told through a total of 7 productions staged throughout 2017and 2018.
