A disabled Electric Picnic attendee has told organisers to “do better” after noting a number of accessibility issues at this year’s festival. Fionn Collins, who attended with his boyfriend, shared his experience in a TikTok video posted on Tuesday, September 1, after also speaking to the Irish Independent.
Electric Picnic took place from August 28 to 30 in Stradbally, Co. Laois. It was Fionn’s seventh time attending, and his third time getting into the accessibility platform.
Fionn explained that this year, the platform was moved from in front of the stage to in between the bar and the toilets, sparking a number of issues. “Lads were trying to go up and pee on the side,” he mentioned, for one.
A lot of people were also pushing into the accessibility platform and blocking exit and entry routes: “After the main acts, some of the wheelchair users and people who have mobility issues could not get in or out at all.”
He additionally noted that the view wasn’t as good as previous years. “For some people who were visually impaired, they couldn’t actually really see the stage,” he expressed.
Fionn himself wears hearing aids and knows some Irish Sign Language, and said that the interpreters were fantastic. He also praised the staff at the accessibility campsite for being “so helpful”, but said that the festival overall was under-resourced.
“There were problems with ramps for accessibility for people with mobility issues. Yes, there was a cart to bring people around, but again people still couldn’t get around on those carts because there was overcapacity.”
He ended the video saying, “EP, you need to do better and you need to listen to the feedback from the (Irish Independent) article and from many other people who’ve been emailing you.”
He emphasised the importance of Electric Picnic organisers listening to people with mobility issues about their experiences with accessibility at the festival, and added, “In regard to the view, put it back to where it was because again, putting us to the side made everybody feel like second-class citizens between a bar and toilets and the f*cking smell was mank.”
