Emma Stone has signed on to play tennis legend Bille Jean King in an upcoming biopic.
Actress Emma Stone will star opposite Steve Carrell in a film depicting the 1973 Battle of the Sexes between the two tennis masters, whose match was the highest-rated television event since the Moon Landing. King came out on top, with Riggs reportedly saying post-match, “I underestimated you.”
This King-Riggs stand-off film is just one of three currently in the works. One version, for HBO, will star Elizabeth Banks as King and Paul Giamatti as Riggs, while the other, called Match Maker, will take on a more comedic tone with Will Ferrell as Riggs.
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, the film will be in the same tone as their most successful film to date, Little Miss Sunshine.
Battle of the Sexes will be ready for release in 2016.
