Irish Facebook users are to now able choose from over 70 gender options for their profiles.

Having already given other countries, such as the US and UK, the options to choose from more than 70 gender identities, Facebook has given the option to users in Ireland as of May 30.

The list of genders includes androgynous, intersex, gender fluid, transsexual and bi-gender. Its settings have been changed so users can now choose “they, their or them” and not just “his” or “her”.

The site allows users to add up to 10 terms to describe themselves while also being able to control the friends with whom they want to share their custom gender.

According to The Irish Times, Facebook worked with a group of leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organisations, including BeLongTo, to come up with the new gender categories.
