Yesterday the Presidential Commission signed the Marriage Bill 2015 into law
The commission consists of Chief Justice Susan Denham, Dáil Éireann Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett and his Seanad counterpart Senator Paddy Burke.
They signed the change to the constitution into law in the absence of President Michael D Higgins, who is currently on a State visit to the States, to commemorate those who died in the Berkeley balcony collapse.
Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald must now issue a commencement order which will allow same-sex couples to start getting married.
This means that from mid-November state recognised same-sex weddings can take place in Ireland.
In May 2015, the amendment to the constitution was approved by more than 1.2 million people.
