Avatar: Seven Havens premiered on Paramount+ on October 9 with a three-episode release, and fans can’t get enough of new characters Jae and Datu, the first confirmed canon gay male couple in the Avatar universe.
Appearing in the first episode of the series, Jae is an airbender who befriends and mentors fellow airbenders, Pavi and Nisha. Episode 3 of the series revealed that the character was in a same-sex relationship with the introduction of Datu, a member of Ellora’s guard. When they meet, they share an embrace, and Datu kisses Jae on the cheek. Fans rejoiced at seeing more long-awaited canonical LGBTQ+ characters added to the Avatar world.
Jae and Datu are not the first LGBTQ+ characters seen within the Avatar universe. Fans highly suspect Zuko, introduced in the film Avatar: The Last Airbender, to be bisexual, while characters Korra and Asami are canonically bisexual. However, the show didn’t always include this level of representation.
Despite not directly having any queer characters in the original Last Airbender series, the show was still a beacon to LGBTQ+ fans, quickly becoming beloved by the community. The show’s themes of empowerment, journeys of self-discovery and breaking of gender roles make it clear why it resonated with so many young queer viewers.
With that in mind, it is no wonder fans can’t get enough of openly queer representation in a world they already connect with so strongly.
Fans took to X to express their excitement about Jae and Datu, with one posting, “HELLO GAY PEOPLE HELLO GAY PEOPLE HELLO HOMOSEXUALS IN MY AVATAR SERIES IT IS SO NICE TO MEET YOU.”
Another wrote, “There’s an openly gay man who’s a lead in avatar seven havens yall!! like this is what the fans want to see!!!”
Further episodes will be released weekly throughout October. Episodes four to six will be released on October 16, seven to nine on October 23, and episodes 10 to 13 on October 30. The series has already earned fan acclaim and has been renewed for a third and fourth season, according to Deadline.
