Kazakhstan had proposed an anti-gay ‘propaganda’ law which would have banned pornography and information seen as promoting violence and “non-traditional relationships.”

The legislation – similar to that of Russia’s anti-gay law – was passed through both houses of parliament before being struck down by the Constitutional Council for being unconstitutional.

Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, is bidding to host the 2022 Winter Games. This month, Martina Navratilova led a group of 26 other athletes to write to International Olympic Committee (IOC), President Thomas Bach.  calling for Kazakhstan to be denied the Olympics if the measure was passed.

The athletes, including out footballer Robbie Rogers, called for Kazakhstan to be denied the Olympics if the measure was passed.

The Olympic Commission was criticised for allowing Russia to host the Winter Olympics in 2014, following the country’s promotion of homophobic laws.
