Trudeau, who visited Farmleigh as part of a 3-day tour of Ireland, was greeted by the Taoiseach and gifted a pair of lurid green socks – a nod to the Canadian PM’s taste for shocking stockings.

The Taoiseach even upped his own sock-game for the event, sporting a pair of ultra-Canadian Mountie red socks with gold maple leaves.

Trudeau, who is briefly visiting Ireland with his family ahead of next week’s G20 summit in Hamburg, is scheduled to meet President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtarán this evening. He is also set to visit the Famine memorial statues on Custom House Quay this afternoon.

Trudeau, apart from being lauded for his quirky footwear, has inspired a peculiar fandom and due to his youth, wholesome appearance and sixth-sense for a killer photo op. His pro-LGBT stance – he was the first Canadian PM to march in a Pride parade last year– has endeared him to many LGBT+s world-wide.

Last month, he and wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau marched together in Toronto Pride. “It’s all about how we celebrate the multiple layers of identities that make Canada extraordinary and strong,” he told reporters before the event.
