Star Wars actor, Mark Hamill, said that his the sexuality of his character Luke Skywalker is left open to the viewer to interpret.
Director of the Star Wars reboot JJ Abrams revealed last week that “of course” he would like to see an LGBT character in the franchise. He said, “When I talk about inclusivity it’s not excluding gay characters. It’s about inclusivity. So of course.”
The Sun reports that Mark Hamill, who reprised his role in The Force Awakens, also would back the introduction of a gay character, and that his Skywalker persona might already be one. “I just read online that JJ is very much open to [having a gay character]. In the old days you would get fan mail,” he said.
“But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out’. They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer.
“If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”
Last year, JJ Abrams’ reboot of Star Wars:The Force Awakens was 2015’s highest grossing film, and the highest grossing film ever in North America.
