Mother Of 11 Year-Old Drag Queen Responds To Criticism After Gay Bar Performance

Desmond, whose drag alter ego is 'Desmond is Amazing', sparked controversy when an article claimed he danced half-naked at a gay bar.

Young drag queen Desmond is Amazing

The mother of 11 year-old drag queen ‘Desmond is Amazing’ has defended her son’s performance at a gay bar in Brooklyn after an article claimed he was being exploited and danced ‘half-naked’ like a ‘stripper’.

“Drag Kid Desmond Is Amazing delivered a headlining performance at a sleazy Brooklyn gay bar on Dec. 1, where the ten year-old boy danced on stage in a crop top and full face of makeup as a throng of adult men in the audience showered him in dollar bills,” the article read.

Responding through Desmond’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, Desmond’s mother Wendy wrote, “Hi, it’s Mom. I can’t believe I have to type this.

“Articles have been coming out claiming that my son danced half-naked and stripped in a sleazy gay bar for grown men who threw dollars at him and is being exploited and forced to perform.

“THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN BLATANT HOMOPHOBIA and [a] display of the grossly outdated belief that gay men are paedophiles.”

Hi, it's mom. I can't believe I have to type this. Articles have been coming out claiming that my son danced half naked and stripped in a sleazy gay bar for grown men who threw dollars at him and is being exploited and forced to perform. THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN BLATANT HOMOPHOBIA and display of the grossly outdated belief that gay men are pedophiles. The truth is, Desmond is a professional drag performer. No one forces him to perform, performing is what he loves to do and has always loved to do. He was a ballet dancer for four years and is currently earning an A+ grade in drama at his school. He is extremely talented in his celebrity and character impersonations. His costumes are less revealing than a dancer's or cheerleader's uniform, and are always age appropriate. While he dances, he does not move in a sexual manner. He often collects tips, as drag queens sometimes do, which we allow him to keep and he uses to buy clothing and the toy trains he wants. His engagements are contracted and booked by his management agency. All of his performances are conducted in accordance with the Dept of Labor's regulations for child performers. Desmond is never allowed into the bar area of any club, nor the main floor. He stays backstage with me, in the dressing room, or on stage only. It must be noted, however, that it is not illegal in NYC for a minor to be in an establishment that serves alcohol as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Desmond was the sole performer for the event at the center of this controversy and he performed 3 numbers. The venue took measures to make sure it would be age appropriate and audience members that attended were respectful and in good conduct. The performance was promoted and anyone who did not wish to see a drag kid perform in a club did not have to attend. No one forced you to go. I know a lot of drag fans/drag queens do not want to see kids in what they consider an adult form of entertainment or venue, but drag is changing and becoming more widespread and popular with people of all ages, genders, identities, races, abilities, and disabilities. Instead of tearing drag kids down, why not mentor them? They are the future of drag.

Wendy has also had to respond to a video which claimed that Desmond was being drugged, writing on Instagram, “The video is highly doctored & edited from the original video to appear that this is the case. Sadly, we have received a lot of flack from within the LGBTQ+ & drag community because of these accusations.”

A fake video has been circulating claiming that Desmond is being drugged. The video is highly doctored & edited from the original video to appear that this is the case. Sadly, we have received a lot of flack from within the LGBTQ+ & drag community because of these accusations – But here's the TRUTH: in July 2018 Desmond participated with drag queen @bellanochenyc in a live FB video for @spoilednyc. Bella's intentions were to interview Desmond & talk about drag kids – Desmond was dressed in his particular style of drag – artistic, colorful, & a little punk rock. Seconds after the video started, several haters joined in on the chat. They started to bully him & tease his appearance saying he looked like he was on drugs, particularly ketamine & rohypnol, had AIDS, was sickly, should be killed, was a victim of child abuse etc. Desmond began to respond to the comments with sass & sarcastic comebacks. To one drug remark he pretended to sniff his hand – He was not serious & was just frustrated with the hate & comments. Desmond knows about drugs from school & TV (same as I did when I was his age, 11yrs old, & in middle school). Desmond is definitely NOT on drugs or drugged. He hates drugs. At @wigstock2 this year, he even scolded @thejinkx backstage for smoking a cigarette – He is inspired by the fashion & makeup of the club kids (not the bad stuff!) & the creativity of the artists during 1980s-90s in NYC which he discovered while watching Nelson Sullivan videos on YouTube. He began watching the NS videos because he wanted to see what @rupaulofficial looked like back in the day. He is aware that drugs played a part in destroying that scene and he wants nothing to do with drugs – . Desmond has been an outstanding member & awarded advocate for the community, especially LGBTQ+ youth. He is feeling discouraged that people are believing the video & blames himself for wanting a career. It's really sad that people would believe such a fabricated video.
