Mother Raising Funds To Evacuate Gays From Chechnya

All profits from Mother nightclub next weekend will go towards the evacuation of gay men from Chechnya

 

Mother: Babooshka, Tunes for Chechnya, this coming Saturday at Dublin’s The Hub, is a special fundraiser helping gay men escape the Russian Republic of Chechnya, where leader Ramzan Kadyrov has promised a ‘cleansing’ of homosexual men by the beginning of Ramadan in May.

Gay men have reported entrappment, violent interrogations using electrocution, and beatings that have left at least three victims dead. In response to the growing emergency, gay rights group, the Russian LGBT Network, based in St. Petersburg, which has established an emergency, round-the-clock volunteer group to help gay men escape the region. The network are buying airplane tickets for Chechen gay men, and arranging for doctors to treat those who have been badly beaten.

“Gays in Chechnya and the North Caucasus are in lethal danger,” Igor Kochetkov, director of the Russian LGBT Network, told the New York Times. “People whose partners are detained have every reason to believe they will be arrested. It is very hard not to name the names under torture.”

This Saturday night at Mother, Dublin’s favourite weekly danceclub, Ruth Kavanagh and Glamo go back-to-back playing disco, electronic and Mother tunes ’til the wee small hours, showing support and solidarity with our brothers in Chechnya, and helping save lives.
