Tyler Glenn, lead singer of US pop quartet Neon Trees has revealed that he is gay in the latest issue of Rolling Stone.

The frontman, who was raised Mormon, told Rolling Stones’  Caryn Ganz, “I’ve always felt like I’m an open book, and yet obviously I haven’t been completely.”

Glenn admitted to RS that he knew he was gay since childhood, but kept his sexuality hidden. He said, “I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my 20s. Then I’d be dating girls and in love with my straight friend. It was the worst feeling in the world.”

Speaking about his church’s notoriously anti-gay stance on marriage equality he commented, “We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance.'” Glenn said that his opinion changed in 2008 when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent an estimated $22m on campaigning against same-sex marriage in California. He said, “The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up.”

Neon Trees are most famous for their 2010 song Animal which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.
