It was announced that 16 year-old Elle Fanning (Maleficent, Super 8) will star alongside Susan Sarandon and Naomi Watts in the film, which documents the life of a teenager who is in the process of transitioning to a male called Ray.

Watts will play Maggie, the single mother of Ray, who is having difficulty coming to terms with her sons transition. Sarandon will play Maggie’s mother and Ray’s grandmother, who works in the music industry and is in a lesbian relationship.

Three Generations is likely to attract attention from trans rights groups, criticising the casting of a cisgender actor instead of trans. Last year, Oscar winning drama Dallas Buyers Club came under similar fire for it’s casting of Jared Leto as a trans woman.

At the time, trans activist and Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox, spoke about these casting choices. She told Bustle, “It’s about business and we are in, as bell hooks calls it, Imperialist White Supremacist Capitalist Patriarchy, so that market forces can’t be dismissed when casting decisions are made… Trans actresses certainly need jobs.”

Three Generations, written by Nikole Beckwith, is set to start filming this week. A release date has yet to be confirmed.
