Rowan County Clerk, Kim Davis, walked free from a Kentucky detention centre to a massive applause after spending five days behind bars for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Kim Davis caught the world’s attention when she refused to comply with several court orders to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the Supreme Court’s historic ruling in June, adding that she was acting under “God’s authority”.

She was incarcerated last Thursday, but was released on Tuesday afternoon after six nights behind bars.

“It’s six days too late,” her attorney Roger Gannam said, “but we’re glad to report Judge Bunning has ordered that she be immediately released from custody.”

The clerk was escorted by Gannam out of the facility onto a stage while Survivor’s hit Eye of the Tiger blasted from loud speakers. She was introduced to a roaring rally of supporters by Republican presidential candidate, Mike Huckabee.

“God showed up in the form of an elected official: Kim Davis,” Huckabee said following the rally which he organised.

“Today I was proud to stand with Kim Davis as she was released from jail. Kim Davis should have never been locked up for being a Christian and for following her conscience and the law.”

Meanwhile, band members from Survivor are angry that their song was used at the rally. They posted on their Facebook page, “NO! We did not grant Kim Davis any rights to use ‘My Tune -The Eye Of The Tiger.’”

“I would not grant her the rights to use Charmin! C’mom Mike, you are not The Donald but you can do better than that -See Ya really SoooooooonnnnnnN!!!!!!”
