Yared Nuguse has publicly come out, introducing the world to his boyfriend in an adorable social media post. The Team USA runner, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics, posted a series of photos on Instagram, celebrating the couple’s one-year anniversary.

“Introducing my boyfriend, Julian,” the athlete wrote. “Can’t believe we’re already one year in my love.”

In a cheeky nod to his public coming out, Nuguse added: “(Don’t act so surprised)”.

The post received an array of supportive comments, including from Paralympian Hunter Woodhall, Olympians Kara Goucher and Kara Winger, and trans athlete Chris Mosier, to name a few.

Non-binary runner Nikki Hiltz also responded, simply saying: “Obsessed”. Meanwhile, fellow gay athlete Matt Llano wrote: “Love this – you will inspire so many!!!”

Yared Nuguse is a middle-distance runner who specialises in the 1,500 metre event. His announcement comes just under two months after he set a new world record in the indoor mile at the Millrose Games, running 3:46.63.

After the historic moment, he took to Instagram to say: “Been thinking about it a lot. Especially how crazy it is to think that no one in the whole dang world has ever run that fast in the mile (indoors) before. Feels like we’re really rewriting history here. I’m sure there’s much more the come.”

At the Paris Olympics in August, he came third in the 1,500 metre, passing out one of the pre-race favourites, Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

Another Team USA Olympian, Jade Carey, also recently went public about her queer relationship. Similar to Nuguse, the gymnast hard-launched her girlfriend, Aimee Sinacola, on Instagram with a series of photos, alongside the caption: “happy”.

Simone Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, wrote: “freaking cuuuuuute,” while USA Gymnastics said: “always applauding your authenticity”.

24-year-old Carey represented the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics as an individual, winning gold in the floor exercise. She was one of the US ‘Golden Girls’  for the 2024 Games, where she earned another gold, this time in the team event, and a bronze on vault.
