Good Luck Charlie, the first Disney Channel programme to include a same-sex couple, is being boycotted by conservative US parents’ association One Million Moms.
The children’s sitcom introduced the couple, played by Leigh-Allyn Baker and Bridgit Mendler, as parents of one of the show’s reoccurring characters, Taylor, on January 28, reports Digital Spy.
One Million Moms – an off-shoot of the American Family Association – made global headlines in 2012 when they unsuccessfully campaigned for the removal of “open homosexual” Ellen DeGeneres as the spokesperson for JC Penney.
The group released a statement opposing the episode. “Disney has decided to be politically correct instead of providing family-friendly programming,” it read.
“Disney should stick to entertaining, not pushing an agenda. Conservative families need to urge Disney to avoid controversial topics that children are far too young to comprehend.”
The full statement is available to read on the group’s website, here.
