President Barack Obama was heckled by a trans woman during a speech about LGBT rights, to which he responded, “you’re in my house, it’s not respectful”.
“President Obama, release all LGBTQ immigrants from detention,” said Jennicet Gutiérrez, who identified as a trans woman. “I am tired of the violence we’re facing.”
The exchange went on for approximately two minutes, without intervention from White House security.
“There is no pride in how LGBTQ and transgender immigrants are treated in this country. If the president wants to celebrate with us, he should release the LGBTQ immigrants locked up in detention centers immediately,” Gutiérrez said in a statement sent to Fusion.
“The White House gets to make the decision whether it keeps us safe, ” she said.
