Buzz O’Neill, the promoter of Ireland’s longest running LGBT+ club night, Bukkake, has publicly called for an end to GHB (G) usage in their club.
GHB is a drug which if too much is consumed can cause sedation, loss of consciousness, or even death. Following a Bukkake event where attendees visibly ‘went under’ – passed out from GHB usage – the club made the following post on their social media accounts:
It was accompanied by the message: “We need to talk about G. After recent events at the last party, we need to approach this subject. It’s ruining the club scene… We can’t let that happen, and we need to have chats with our friends about this. Enjoy the party and look after each other.”
Buzz told GCN, “G has been around for quite a while, it’s just moved away from the after party scene and into mainstream clubbing. It doesn’t belong in a club, it doesn’t add anything to your night.”
The response to the post was very positive, many of those online congratulating the promoters for speaking up about an issue which had gone largely unmentioned on the club scene. Attendees at the following event also praised the organisers saying the night had improved for the better.
Following the positive feedback, the club shared, “We only have one aim here, and that’s to get back to making Bukkake the most fun, the most safe, and most amazing party out there on the scene. Things had definitely taken a slight detour in that regards and we put in measures to try and correct that. Of course not everyone was totally happy with these measures, but we really felt it was time to try and fix this, and not ignore it.”
Buzz added, “Bukkake is in our 12th year coming up this month. It’s been an up-for-it, brilliant, friendly, fun clubbing event and we want to keep it that way.”
Tickets for the Bukkake June bank holiday event are available here.

GCN has been a vital, free-of-charge information service for Ireland’s LGBTQ+ community since 1988.
During this global COVID pandemic, we like many other organisations have been impacted greatly in the way we can do business and produce. This means a temporary pause to our print publication and live events and so now more than ever we need your help to continue providing this community resource digitally.
GCN is a registered charity with a not-for-profit business model and we need your support. If you value having an independent LGBTQ+ media in Ireland, you can help from as little as €1.99 per month. Support Ireland’s free, independent LGBTQ+ media.
