Russia is at it once again with a new report accusing the EU of promoting an “alien view of homosexuality and same-sex marriages as norm of life”.
The report, which focuses on human rights in the EU, was published this Tuesday by the Russian Foreign Ministry, criticises the EU’s “aggressive propaganda of homosexual love” and calls the situation in Europe “far from ideal.”
The English translation of the report refers to gay people as “queers” and goes on to note “a steady growth of xenophobia, racism, violent nationalism, chauvinism and neo-Nazism” in Europe.
This is the second report of its kind released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, which has its own established ombudsman’s office.
Moscow has faced serious criticism itself from the West following the passing of its controversial law last June banning “the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations” among minors.
President Putin signed the law, but went on to deny that gay rights are violated in Russia.
Comment from Rob Buchanan
This sounds like something from the desk of a pantomime villain or a North Korean bureaucrat. The Russian Foreign Ministry strongly criticises the EU for “dissemination of their neo-liberal values as a universal lifestyle for all other members of the international community”. Of particular note, in this official document, is the vocabulary referring to homosexuals as “queers”.
As if this pot-kettle-black situation wasn’t surreal enough, paradoxically for Russia, the report also notes a “a steady growth of xenophobia, racism, violent nationalism, chauvinism and neo-Nazism” in Europe, as if this was the fault of a homosexual agenda.
This is a deluded and isolationist narrative, aimed at painting the decadent West as overly tolerant of all aberration, yet simultaneously of xenophobic and racist.
One would hope the people in Russia reading such contradictory statements will see them for what they are, but in a nation so jaded by the corrosive effects of propoganda, one might wonder if the truth is so obscured as to be invisible.
