On 20 December, Slovenia will hold a referendum in an attempt to block same-sex marriage

Earlier this year, the Slovenian Parliament passed a bill to legalise same-sex marriage. This law defines marriage as a union between two consenting adults.

Some members of the public vocally objected to the legislation. The referendum is an attempt to block the same-sex marriage bill.

The call for a referendum was pushed through by conservative groups backed by the Catholic Church.

A group called “Children Are At Stake” gathered the 40,000 signatures necessary to call a referendum. They have argued the law paves the way for gay couples to adopt children.
