There has been a huge backlash on social media following a decision by The Sun to devote their front page headline to mock the wedding of a Trans couple.
Captain Hannah Winterbourne, Britain’s highest ranking transgender soldier, married her partner, actor and filmmaker, Jake Graf in a ceremony in London. Although the couple had agreed to be interviewed by The Sun regarding their marriage, they were not prepared for the headline the tabloid decided to attach to the article.
“Tran And Wife”, read the headline, “Jake who used to be a woman weds Hannah who was a man”. It was accompanied by a photo of the couple leaving Chelsea Town Hall, with smaller photos attached showing the pair before they transitioned.
Graf tweeted, saying despite the article being positive, “It’s a real shame that it’s been cheapened by such a sensationalised and misleading headline. [Hannah] was never a man, as I was never a woman.”
Following an interview between the couple and The Huffington Post, a spokesperson for The Sun released a statement insisting they had held conversations with members of the LGBT community on the suitability of the article before printing it.
Not addressing the apparent disconnect between the headline and article, the statement continued, “We’ve put this story on a front page in order to celebrate a wonderful modern romance. I want to emphasise that there was no intention to offend”.
Ironically, Winterbourne had first come to Graf’s attention after appearing in another of The Sun’s front page articles about her decision to transition while in the army.
Social media was flooded with comments calling the headline transphobic and bigoted. Despite some positive movements forward for the Trans community, Trans Media Watch stated they had always promoted caution for Trans people dealing with The Sun.
Thankfully, the headlines didn’t ruin the couple’s happy day. The pair were delighted with their Disney-themed wedding with Winterbourne saying, “I never thought when I was young it could happen to me”.
