The European Men who have sex with men Internet Survey (EMIS) 2017 is now open and looking for men who have sex with men (MSM) to take part.

Conducted by Sigma Research in the UK and takes between 15-25 minutes to complete, EMIS 2017 is the “world’s largest survey of gay men, bisexual men and other men (including trans men) who are attracted to men.”

Gay Health Network (GHN), supported by the HSE is leading the promotion of the survey within Ireland in partnership with NGOs, voluntary and statutory organisations. EMIS 2017 is funded by the European Union Health Programme.

The survey is open to you if you are: a “man who has sex with men”; “a man who is attracted to other men”; or “a man who thinks he might have sex with men in the future.”

The research “asks about relationships, sex life, risks and precautions, and use of health services” and the data from the survey will be used to help improve health services for MSM across Europe.

Why should I take part? Because we all want better sex with less harm,” the welcome page for EMIS 2017 declares.

“By taking part you might find out something new. Although there will be no direct benefit to you from the information you provide, it will help health and social services to better meet the communities needs.”

“It could also mean that services for gay and bisexual men are funded.”

The EMIS welcome page puts those concerned with their privacy at ease, saying that they do not collect the TC/IP-address of devices that take part in the survey, nor do they try to install any cookies.

The data is also being collected anonymously, which should help put participants’ concerns over their answers being identifiable to rest. is available in over thirty languages including English, Portuguese and Spanish.
